Why
go to church?
I don't have a silver-bullet answer. Personally,
though, I don't have the confidence in my own spiritual insights
that many people have in theirs.
They seem confident, doing spirituality individually,
apart from the people of the church.
Ever buy something that turned out to be a lemon?
So why can't you be deceived in your own individualized
spirituality? A sucker is born every minute. Jesus
said, "My words are Spirit and they are life." (John
6:63) Sunday worship
thrusts at me those words of God, puts them in my face. I
may not agree with the human interpretation, but when my mind is
wrestling with biblical words, the Spirit is there.
In my work, it's better if I can speak to several hundred
people at one time rather than speaking to them individually.
I think that's also true of the Spirit. Yes, He works on
solo spiritual flights ... but He's more effective when His
people gather together.
"Take not Thy Holy Spirit from me."
(Psalm 51:11) That possibility is more likely to happen
when you fly spiritually solo.

Life Quote
"Real life is only possible in this world if we know
and believe in a real presence, the real, bodily presence of
Christ, sent by the Father into our world to reach out His
hand—the hand of God—to heal those who are broken by sin—to
hold a little child and bless it—to stretch it out on a cross
to receive a nail for our redemption." Rev. Dr. Arthur A.
Just, Jr., Professor of Exegetical Theology, Dean of the Chapel,
and Director of Deaconess Studies at Concordia Theological
Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana. A Life Quote from Lutherans
For Life / www.lutheransforlife.org / 888-364-LIFE
F
Life Thought
The world presents conformity (Romans 12:2) as
being easy. For example, the "easy" way out of a crisis
pregnancy is abortion. The "easy" way out of pain and
suffering is suicide or assisted suicide. In Christ, God
transforms the Christian to think differently. Minds renewed in
Christ do not look for the "easy" way but God’s way,
that which is "good and acceptable and perfect"
(12:2c).
F
Creation Bit
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time
are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be
revealed in us. For
the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the
revealing of the sons of God.
For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly,
but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation
itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into
the glorious liberty of the children of God.
For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with
birth pangs together until now.
Not only that, but we also who have the first fruits of
the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly
waiting for the adoption,
the redemption of our body. Romans
8:18-23 (NKJV)

Meeting Minutes are available on the ledges and in the narthex on

Lutheran School News …
&
Our school is very much alive and well as the following statistics show, and we are moving forward in the
mercy and grace of God. 2008-2009
Enrollment by Class: Preschool=11,
Pre-kindergarten=21, Kindergarten=24, Grade 1=12,
Grade 2=22, Grade 3=23, Grade 4=20, Grade
5=13, Grade 6=23, Grade 7=16, Grade 8=11.
Grand Total=196 (only 2 fewer than the 198 that we
ended the 2007-2008 school year with).
We joyfully thank God for the privilege to assist parents
in the training of their children both spiritually and
academically! Please
help us fill the empty desks by enrolling your child(ren) in our
school for an academically-quality education in a soundly
Christian setting … and encourage others to do the same both
within and outside our congregation.
&

For the opening of the volleyball season, our girls will scrimmage St. Vincent- Perryville in our gym at
Immanuel Lutheran School again this year.

Immanuel’s food pantry. This
year we will once again collect food and give it to St.
Vincent’s food pantry. They
were extremely generous last year and we plan to return the
favor! Thanks in
advance for your help and support!
&
We will host five volleyball games this
season. At
each one of the games after the September Board meetings, we will
offer free admission to the members of the eight boards that
serve the congregation of Immanuel Lutheran Church and School.
Each Board will have an envelope with coupons.
A bulletin board with information concerning the work of
each board will be in the lobby at school so that everyone
entering knows about the work it does.
Please plan to join us!

September 16 vs. St. Vincent-Perryville: Youth Board and Parish
Education
Tuesday,
September 23 vs. Salem: Board

designated $20,000 to the building fund.

“Cardinal Care” grants once again gave us
money.
We will use it to enhance the work done in our computer
lab. We thank the St.
Louis Cardinals for their generosity!
&

Board members.

&
Immanuel Lutheran School Tuition Assistance Having now begun the
2008-2009 school year we remind you that the tuition for students
whose father, mother, or both are members of our congregation is
$990/year. God has
blessed us through the generosity of gracious donors to enable us
to say to our members that “money will not be the reason for
your child(ren) to not be able to attend our school.”
We again ask that you prayerfully consider contributing to
the Immanuel Lutheran School tuition assistance fund.
And, thank you in advance for your donation!
If you desire to sponsor an individual student, please
call the school office (547-6161) or the church office
(547-8317).
